DATE AREA OBSERVATIONS
FEBRUARY 24 N TX NICE SHELF CLOUD WITH SOME MODERATELY STRONG WINDS, NOTHING SEVERE OBSERVED.

APRIL 6
SW KS A HIGH RISK DAY WITH LOW RETURN.  SURFACE WINDS WERE AT TIMES SUSTAINED AT 40MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  WE INTERCEPTED A TORNADIC SUPERCELL IN FAR SW KS NEAR HUGOTON, KS.   SOME STRONG SFC WINDS WERE MEASURED WITH SMALL HAIL.
APRIL 10 W OK / NW TX I WENT TO W OK ALONG BORDER OF TX PAN, MET UP WITH PIOTROWSKI, SHANE ADAMS, MATT SELLERS AND WE ALL LOOKED AT DATA.  WENT SOUTH TO CDS AND THEN WENT SE ALONG 287 WITH A STORM TO SOUTH, WHICH WASN'T WORTH GOING AFTER SO WENT HOME.

APRIL 14
NW TX/SW OK THIS DAY STARTED OUT LOOKING GREAT FOR TORNADIC SUPERCELLS.  HOWEVER, STORMS HAD PROBLEMS GETTING ORGANIZED AS THEY MOVED EAST INTO MORE STABLE AIR.  STORMS IN KANSAS FLOURISHED, DROPPED A FEW TORNADOES INCLUDING A WEDGE NEAR PRATT, KS.

APRIL 22
NW TX DROVE BACK FROM LIT TO OUN.   TARGET WAS NW TX.  LINE OF STORMS QUICKLY FORMED.  SAW A NICE WALL CLOUD IN WISE COUNTY.
MAY 4 W TX SAW SOME TCU ALONG THE DRYLINE, BUT VERY QUIET OUT WEST AS TORNADOES TOUCHED DOWN NEAR MY HOME TOWNS OF OUN AND DFW.

MAY 5
SW OK CHASED A SHOWER THAT EXPLODED INTO A LOW TOPPED SUPERCELL.  GOT OFF THE STORM AND WENT SOUTH AND MISSED THE TORNADO NEAR CORDELL.  VERY PHOTOGENIC STRUCTURE AND FUNNEL OBSERVED FROM THE FIRST STORM.

MAY 6
SC OK SAW A TORNADIC SUPERCELL JUST WEST OF ARDMORE.  SPECTACULAR SUPERCELL STRUCTURE AND A GORGEOUS TORNADO UNDER 1/2 MILE AWAY WAS OBSERVED.  ALONG WITH MANY NUMEROUS WALL CLOUDS / FUNNELS.  MORE TEXT BELOW.
MAY 17 W OK / TX PAN CHASE BUDDY'S SCOTT BLAIR, AMOS M., JEFF LAWSON, JEFF GAMMONS, DAVE, AND I SAW SOME VERY NICE STRUCTURE IN N OK, THEN WENT WEST TO AN HP SUPERCELL NEAR CONWAY, TX.  CORE PUNCHED THE 73 DBZ BOW AND ENCOUNTERED SUSTAINED 70MPH WINDS WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  WINDS WERE ONLY MEASURED FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE THE HAIL DAMAGED THE ANEMOMETER IN MANY PLACES.  VERY INTENSE 1.5-2 INCH HAIL FELL WITH THE STRONG WINDS.  A ROAR WAS HEARD FROM THE GROUND BEING BEAT BY HAIL AND WIND.

MAY 18
NM / CO BORDER CHASE BUDDY SCOTT BLAIR AND I SAW A GORGEOUS MOTHERSHIP LP SUPERCELL WITH 3 WALL CLOUDS OVER AN HOUR LONG.   INCREDIBLE UP-CLOSE LIGHTING WAS OBSERVED AS WELL WITH THIS STORM.  WE RANGED FROM 5-1 MILES AWAY ON AVERAGE ON A SMALL UNPAVED ROAD.  HAIL COVERED THE GROUND TO OUR NORTH.  WATCHED IT UNTIL IT DRIED UP, WHILE STILL ROTATING.  VERY INCREDIBLE DAY!!

MAY 19
TX PAN / NW TX NOT SUCH A GOOD DAY, TWO FOR THREE IS GOOD ENOUGH.  WE STARTED AROUND PAMPA ON AN HP SUPERCELL WITH A TORNADO WARNING.  VERY OUTFLOW DOMINANT.  WE WENT SOUTH AND EAST AND ENDED UP NEAR CDS ON A STORM WHICH HAD A DEVELOPING RFD NOTCH, WITH RAIN BANDS ROTATING AROUND IT OVERHEAD.   AN INCREDIBLE SITE THAT JASON PERSOFF, SCOTT BLAIR, JEFF GAMMONS & DAVE, AND I ALL ENJOYED.
MAY 20 E OK TARGETED AREA JUST NW OF ADA, OK.  MAJOR CONVERGENCE WAS GOING ON RIGHT THERE WITH ESE WINDS AHEAD OF IT.   DUE TO BAD ROAD NETWORK I KEPT LOOSING THE STORM, IT WAS MOVING 30KTS.  I DOVE SOUTH TO ANOTHER SUPERCELL WHICH PRODUCED TWO OR THREE WALL CLOUDS WHICH WOULD LOOK PROMISING FOR A FEW MIN. THEN GUST OUT.  SMALL HAIL WAS OBSERVED IN BOTH STORMS.   WENT HOME AFTER THE SECOND SUPERCELL GUSTED OUT FOR A THIRD TIME.  I HATE EASTERN OKLAHOMA.

MAY 24
S TX OBSERVED A VERY PRETTY SUPERCELL WITH NICE STACKED PLATE MESO STRUCTURE NE OF ROCKSPRINGS, TX ON THE EDWARDS PLATEAU.  SOME SMALL HAIL WAS OBSERVED, INCREDIBLE LIGHTNING SHOW AFTERWARD.
MAY 25 S TX TRIED SOUTH TX AGAIN BUT CAP HELD AND NO STORMS FORMED TILL AFTER DARK.
MAY 26 TX PAN NICE LP SUPERCELL FORMED ON THE CAPROCK.  IT WAS TOO ELEVATED AND EVENTUALLY GUSTED OUT.  OTHER ROTATING STORMS FORMED BUT LOOKED WEAKER WITH TIME.
010527-2b.jpg (14830 bytes)
MAY 27
SW KS / NW OK SEVERAL SUPERCELLS WERE OBSERVED.  ONE FORMED NEAR MEADE, KS WHICH PRODUCED A WALL CLOUD AND FUNNEL UNTIL IT OCCLUDED.  A LARGE GUST FRONT FORMED WHICH HAD A STRONG AREA OF ROTATION ON IT.   BOTH CLOUD AND GROUND BASED ROTATION WAS EVIDENT... TORNADO?  GUSTNADO?   WAS THAT A WALL CLOUD RAPIDLY ROTATING ALONG THE GUSTFRONT?  WAS IT A GUST-MESO?  :-)  LATER ON WE GOT BEHIND THE NEW WALL CLOUD THAT FORMED AND MEASURED WINDS SUSTAINED AT 50-60MPH WITH A GUST OF 68MPH UNTIL THE ANEMOMETER PROPELLER WAS DAMAGED.  WINDS PERSISTED FOR OVER 30 MIN.
MAY 28 SW TX OBSERVED AN ELEVATED SEVERE STORM.
010529-2b.jpg (9956 bytes)
MAY 29
S TX PAN / W TX AN INCREDIBLE LONG LIVED CYCLIC SUPERCELL FORMED ON THE CAPROCK.  A FEW  WALL CLOUDS, FEW FUNNELS, SOME HAIL UP TO GOLF BALL SIZED, A WEAK DUST WHIRL NEAR TURKEY TEXAS, AND A POSSIBLE TORNADO NEAR SILVERTON, TX, WERE OBSERVED.  THE STRUCTURE WAS AWESOME!!  DOW RECORDED DATA FROM THE TORNADO NEAR TURKEY TEXAS, LASTED 5-10 MINUTES AND HAD WINDS OF 45-50 M/S.
MAY 30 NW TX SUPERCELL FORMED IN NW TX AND PRODUCED A WALL CLOUD AND BRIEF FUNNEL BEFORE OCCLUDING.  HAIL OF QUARTER SIZED AND UP TO GOLF BALL SIZED WAS OBSERVED NORTH OF SCOTLAND, TX.
JUNE 3 SC KS TARGETED SE OF DDC AND SLOWLY MEANDERED EAST.  HAD DINNER IN WELLINGTON, KS, THEN WENT WEST TOWARD A DEVELOPING STORM.  QUICKLY, A SEVERE WARNING AND THEN A TORNADO WARNING WENT OUT ON THIS CELL.  HAD A REALLY NICE BEAVER TAIL LIGHT UP BY LIGHTNING.  A TORNADO WAS SPOTTED AROUND DARK IN KINGMAN, COUNTY, ALTHOUGH WE DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING.  ALSO, REPORTS CAME IN OF TENNIS BALL SIZED HAIL!  DARKNESS PREVAILED, ALONG WITH THE ABILITY TO MAKE OUT ANY FEATURES SO WE HEADED BACK HOME.

JUNE 13
C/NC KS CHASED WITH AMOS M. UP IN KS, NOTHING SIGNIFICANT SEEN, WE WERE TOO FAR SOUTH.  WE WERE LIMITED TO THE SOUTH SINCE WE BOTH HAD CLASS THE NEXT DAY.  WE DID GET TO WATCH A NICE DISTANT TORNADIC SUPERCELL TO OUR NORTH MOVE AWAY FROM US.
JUNE 14 SW / SC OK CHASED THE MARGINAL TO SEVERE STORMS IN STEPHENS COUNTY AREA.  WARNINGS REMAINED ON THOSE STORMS BUT THEY WERE TOO LINEAR AND WEAK SO I CALLED OFF THE CHASE AT 3:30PM AND WENT HOME.
JUNE 19 SC KS NOTHING SIGNIFICANT OBSERVED.  CHASED WITH AMOS, WE WATCHED A STORM IN HARPER COUNTY.  LITTLE BIT OF HAIL AND MODERATE WINDS.  WE ATE AT THE TYPICAL SPOT IN WELLINGTON, KS, THE GREAT WALL CHINESE RESTAURANT.

SEPTEMBER 7
C OK NEAR EL RINO AREA HAD SOME GUSTNADOES, ONE WAS MULTIPLE VORTEX.  NOTHING MAJOR.  WINDS WERE WEAK, HAIL WAS SMALL.
010908-4b.jpg (12142 bytes)
SEPTEMBER 8
NW TX SAW A ROTATING STORM IN YOUNG COUNTY, TX.  NICE STRUCTURE FOR ABOUT 45 MIN.  HAD PRONOUNCED INFLOW BANDING AND BEAVER TAIL FOR A WHILE.  ALSO HAD A NICE ROUND BASE AND SOME STRIATIONS.   WITNESSED A PERSISTENT MID-LEVEL FUNNEL COMING OFF THE NORTH SIDE OF THE STORM.   STORM EVENTUALLY WEAKENED AN HOUR LATER.  ON MY WAY HOME I SAW LIGHTNING STRIKE A TRANSFORMER 20 YARDS OFF I-35 WHICH EXPLODED AND SENT OUT A LARGE PLUME OF SPARKS AND SMOKE.  THAT WAS THE BEST UP-CLOSE LIGHTNING I'VE SEEN IN MY LIFE.

OCTOBER 9
W OK SAW THREE INCREDIBLE SUPERCELLS THAT DROPPED 5 TORNADOES THAT I WITNESSED.  THREE OF THOSE TORNADOES WERE VERY PICTURESQUE.  LITTLE BIGGER THEN GOLF BALL HAIL WAS OBSERVED WEST OF MINCO.   ALL-IN-ALL, ONE OF THE BEST CHASES OF MY LIFE, AND MY BEST CHASE THIS YEAR.  I SAY THE BEST BECAUSE THE STORM STRUCTURE AND TORNADO ENCOUNTERS WERE VERY BEAUTIFUL.

OCTOBER 12

TX / SW TX TARGETED AREAS NORTH OF I-20 BUT INSTEAD ENDED UP IN AN AREA FROM BRECKENRIDGE TO COMANCHE.  THE STORM WE LEFT IN BRECKENRIDGE AREA MAY HAVE BEEN THE STORM THAT HIT DECATUR IN WISE COUNTY.  TWO F2 TORNADOES TOUCHED DOWN THERE AFTER DARK.  SAW SOME SMALL HAIL, BUT MAINLY LOTS OF RAIN AND INCREDIBLE LIGHTNING DURING SUNSET DOWN BY COMANCHE.
